The arrangements in this collection of music for junior brass ensemble were written for Tamworth Junior Brass, an ensemble formed and directed by Adrian Taylor for beginner brass players. Children joined the group having completed the first "Programme of Study" (i.e. they can play the notes C, D, E, F and G with note values down to quavers) playing the 2nd parts and then progressed (usually the following year) onto the 1st parts.
The 2nd parts are written without key signatures (except the bass clef trombone and euphonium parts, which have two flats and bass clef tuba parts, which have three flats) and include some new notes (such as low B, F sharp and high A) and new rhythm patterns, which can easily be picked up by most children. 1st parts do include key signatures and are more challenging; reflecting the standards most children will have reached at this stage. In some cases conductors may wish to have just a couple of especially talented players playing sections of a piece (e.g. a solo verse accompanied by the piano or a solo quartet/quintet verse). Sometimes the trumpet/cornet parts are divided as there are usually more of these instruments than others.
The music has been arranged for the following instrumentation:
Trumpet/Cornet 1 in Bb
Trumpet/Cornet 2 in Bb
French Horn 1 in F
French Horn 2 in F
Tenor Horn 1 in Eb
Tenor Horn 2 in Eb
Trombone/Euphonium 1 (in treble or bass clef) Trombone/Euphonium 2 (in treble or bass clef)
Tuba/Eb Bass 1 (in treble or bass clef)
Tuba/Eb Bass 2 (in treble or bass clef)
Piano
Most arrangements can be performed with just four parts being played, the addition of other parts usually enhancing the arrangement rather than simply doubling existing musical lines.
